1.
Self-Assessment
AGI uses our
Self-Assessment Quiz as our
first and one of our
valuable processes on
helping you with your
education planning as well
as college application.
Knowing what you want to do
begins with knowing
yourself—the real you.
That’s because the better
you understand your own
wants and needs, the better
you will be able to make
decisions about your career
goals and dreams. This
self-assessment inventory
can help.
2. Your
Character Development
If you're
lucky, people will judge you
by your character and not
just by your appearance. But
what do people mean by
"character"?
Your
character is the sum of all
the qualities that make you
who you are. It’s your
values, your thoughts, your
words, your actions. When
admissions counselors review
your application, your
activities and interests
give them a glimpse into
your character.
In the
survey are many attributes
that contribute to your
individual character.
Building on these elements
can help give you a stronger
character and make you a
more attractive prospect as
a potential student. Some of
those considered are:
ATTITUDE; AWARENESS; CARING;
CHARACTER; CITIZENSHIP; and,
COMMITMENT, as examples.
3. Choosing a
major
Choosing a
major usually begins with an
assessment of your career
interests. Once you have
taken the self-assessment
test, you should have a
clearer understanding of
your interests, talents,
values, and goals. Then
review possible majors, and
try several on for size.
Picture yourself taking
classes, writing papers,
making presentations,
conducting research, or
working in a related field.
Talk to people you know who
work in your fields of
interest and see if you like
what you hear. Also, try
reading the classified ads
in your local newspaper.
What jobs sound interesting
to you? Which ones pay the
salary that you’d like to
make? What level of
education is required in the
ads you find interesting?
You will be asked to select a few jobs that you
think you’d like and then
consult the following list
of majors to see which major(s) coincide. If your
area of interest does not
appear here, talk to your
counselor or teacher about
where to find information
that particular subject.
4. You should
also know if the major you
choose is the major in need.
Fastest
growing occupations for the
next ten (10) years, based
upon level of education
achieved. You will click on
the job name for
more information, and
contact AGI’s consultant.
5. Criteria
to Consider
Depending on
your personal interests, the
following characteristics
should play a role in
helping you narrow down the
field of colleges. The
criteria are typically:
Affiliation; Size;
Community; Location;
Housing; Student Body;
Academic Environment;
Financial Aid; Support
Services; Activities/Social
Clubs; Athletics; and,
Specialized Programs.
6. College
Match Quiz
You will be
asked to read each
question and respond by
circling Y (Yes), N (No), or
C (Combination). Complete
all the questions and return
to the top. Highlight each
action that coordinates with
your answer and then read
it. Where you chose C, read
both actions. Is there a
pattern? Do the questions
seem to lead to a certain
type of college or
university? Certain size?
Certain location? Read the
suggestions at the end for
more ideas.
